Considering Doing This When Locked Out

The most logical thing to do when you are locked out is to have someone bring you another key. Well, this isn’t always possible if you have never had a spare key made. This is one of the first things we recommend that people who do not have a spare house key or car key do. It is for this very reason that it is a good idea to have another key available to you. Not having one can put you in an unpleasant situation. It will be an inconvenience for you and anyone else that you might have to rely on for help. This is something that happens to people every day.

How to Get Inside Again

It might be a little easier for you to get back inside your home if you live in an apartment complex. The maintenance person or management office, usually have a master key for each unit in the building. In fact, it is mandatory in some places that an additional key is provided to the management office in case they have an emergency situation and need to gain access into your home. You’ll be required to show them some form of identification in order for them to open the door for you, so keep this in mind in case your id is locked inside. If you don’t live in an apartment building, it can be a little more challenging to gain access back inside. If you had the forethought to give someone a spare key, all you’ll need to do is give them a call to ask them to come open the door for you. Say for instance that the person who has your key is at work and are not capable of coming right away. You can always go to where they are to pick up your spare key. Just remember to return the key to them once you’ve been able to get back inside. Some people do not mind waiting as long as they know they will be able to eventually gain access back inside. Although it might pose some level of inconvenience, it is practical to give someone else a key in case you are locked out and cant’ get inside.

Install Keyless Entries

If you have children, you may not feel as though they are responsible enough to have a key to your home. The next best thing that you can do is to have a keyless entry installed. This eliminates the possibility of them losing a key to the house. The keyless entry doesn’t require that you have a key present in order to get back inside. It is a lock that simply requires that the right code be entered in order for the lock to become disengaged. There are different ways to program your code into the keypad, which you can go over with the technician who installs the keyless locks or consult the owner’s manual.

What to Avoid Doing

You may have heard of other people breaking out a window or using a credit card to get back inside. These are some of the worst things you can do to gain access inside again. They simply create another set of problems. Doing so can give onlookers the same idea. If you happen to catch the attention of a thief, watching how you got inside might give them the idea to do the same thing. Don’t give them the advantage of knowing how to get inside your home. Instead, contact a locksmith service to assist you in gaining access again. Another thing you’ll need to consider is that if you break a window, you’ll have to get the window repaired. You can’t live in a home with broken windows because a thief will have easy access inside your home. Also, don’t leave a spare key in the most obvious places, like underneath the doormat, above the door or under a pot. These are the first places a thief is sure to look. It is a better idea to leave your key with a neighbor, family or friend. Don’t take unnecessary chances with the safety and security of your family. Instead, consider what you will do before you find yourself locked out and proceed accordingly.

Make Sure You’re Always Ready

Being ready means that you have already had a spare key made and given it to someone who is trustworthy and responsible. Don’t hand your key over to someone who is never around to help you when you need them. You shouldn’t give the key to someone who is known to be out of town for an extended amount of time. This wouldn’t benefit you. Have the name and number of someone who is able to assist you, readily available. Keep in mind, if you find yourself locked out and the person who has your extra key is nowhere to be found, most locksmith services offer 24-hour emergency locksmith services for this very reason. You can’t predict when you’ll find yourself locked out of your home but when you are locked out, there is nice to know that help is just a call away.
